Pledge 3: Establish a knowledgeable Conservation Unit for the borough.
This pledge matters because:
-
It would help to restore and protect nature in parks, open spaces, estates and along highways.
-
It would create a partnership with residents. Joint environmental projects could be undertaken regularly.
-
It would revive the Council’s Biodiversity Plan (last updated 16 years ago).
-
It would implement the government’s current Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
-
Greenwich’s Climate Action Scorecard 2025 score for biodiversity is 36% (up from 15% in 2023). This compares to 43% in Lewisham and 64% in Lambeth both of which employ senior staff with specific biodiversity/environmental roles.
-
The Council’s Local Plan Integrated Impact Assessment states a commitment to “protect, restore and enhance biodiversity, landscapes and the open space network” as part of sustainable development planning. This signals a commitment to linking biodiversity goals directly to planning decisions.
